Exciting News! Esther Pedersen phoned to say that her
mare had been found. I gather from the description of the rope
burns on all four legs and scrapes that she was not quite so 'friendly'
for whomever removed her from her pasture and was probably trying
to load her into a trailer. Fortunately, she is now safely at home
and the veterinarian will look at her burns. They appear relatively
superficial and the mare is otherwise unharmed.
I would like to express sincere heartfelt thank-you's to everyone
who called, e-mailed and posted on bulletin boards and web sites
in an effort to find this mare. Thank you also to those who sent
wishes for a safe return. You can all feel very proud that your
hard work and prayers paid off and the Pedersen's are reunited with
their young mare.
This has been a humbling experience for me personally as I spent
last evening researching internet web sites and bulleting boards
for lost and stolen horses because Pedersen's are not on the internet.
I had no concept of the scope and extent of horse theft, not only
in Canada and the USA, but in Europe and around the world. There
were countless sites featuring horses stolen from fields, barns
and competitions. Many it seems are never found, though there are
heartwarming stories of reunions and sad stories where owners at
least eventually find out what happened to their beloved horse.
I know that I will now take a little bit of time to check the missing
horse reports and see if maybe one of those horses has 'appeared'
in a barn I go to. I will check very carefully the good deal that
has no papers or ownership trail, and not be afraid to voice my
concerns to the proper authorities.
Again, thank you everyone. It is certainly wonderful to be able
to report a happy ending.
Regards, Marilyn Powell

MISSING HORSE ALERT: Northern B.C. breeder, Esther Pedersen
of Fort St. John arrived home from holidays to find one of her horse's
missing from pasture. Unfortunately there is a back gate to this
field off an oil road and it has recent tire tracks to the gate.
The person checking on the horses last saw the mare on Tuesday July
25, 2000. After scouring the local area to determine the mare is
not lying injured somewhere, and inquiring of all local residents,
Mrs Pedersen now believes the mare to be stolen.
This mare is a very friendly and because of a white birth mark
on her wither may appear to be a broke riding horse, which she is
NOT.
This has been reported to the RCMP in Fort St John case number:
00-5347 Constable Reeve. Fort St John is very close to Dawson Creek
in the Peace River District of northern B.C.
There are outfitters who head north from this area in the next
week and this mare may be offered for sale to a pack string.
Description: 1997 blood bay mare, approximately 15.2 hands, definitely
not finished growing, few white hairs on front of flanks, white
spot behind left wither, right hind three quarter pastern outside,
higher inside, ermine spots on coronet band, median cowlick. Branded
on left hip with Canadian Warmblood brand (brand is not clear).
The mare is unbroke, but very friendly.
Please contact Esther or her husband Paul at:250-787-2033 if you
can offer any assistance in locating this much loved warmblood mare.

this letter refers to horses listed just above
Dear Friends,
On July 23,1999, a young girl and her beloved mare entered the ring.
The mare, a lovely bay safely guided the child around the rail with
grace, dignity, and more importantly care. She knew it was her job
to protect her young mistress as they elequently performed the gaits
required of them. The child smiled, not a false smile, but a smile
that reflected her love for this mare, who gave the child her all.
For the girl, the mare didn't need to be a show horse, but just
a horse she could love. Their love for each other made them the
team capable of entering a ring and become winners, the trust and
love they shared for one another. That day they won another Championship.
Admirers along the rail remarked what a team they made, how elequent
they were together. Family, friends, and strangers clapped as they
were awarded the championship and made their victory pass. No one
knew though a sinister person was also standing on the rail or perhaps
sitting in the bleachers watching, waiting for an opportunity for
his/her own gain. This was a mare that would make him the money
he so badly needed. No thought was given regarding the child whose
life he was about to shatter.
In the early hours of July 24, 1999, D.A. Rihkha+ was stolen
from the barns at the North Caledon Equestrian Centre, Palgrave,
Canada during the Region 18 Arabian/Half-Arabian Championship Show.
She wasn't alone when she left the grounds. A stablemate, Sarajah
Sun, was stolen with her. Ridden by her amatuer owner that afternoon
of the 23rd, the chestnut mare had won her Championship Western
Pleasure class. The only horse of her loving owner, Linda. Sara
and Rihkha disappeared in the wee hours of the night.
As a mother of a daughter who also shows horses, I know that Pam's
mare isn't just another horse in a show string. Like Silvia, Rihkha's
owner, Pam spends hours working with her mare, but more importantly
sharing her secrets with her. Things she isn't able to share with
a parent, she has entrusted her mare to understand. This is what
helps build the bond to make them such a winning combination. If
my daughter were to lose her mare she would be devastated, as I
know Silvia is after having her mare stolen from her. I became personally
involved with helping to recover these mares because of the heaertache
I feel for these families and because I own Rihkha's sire. I owe
it to my stallion to help find his daughter. She is like a part
of our family. I know these mares are out there someplace and someone
has to run across them somewhere. Two lovely mares can not be kept
hidden forever. They are too valueable to the thieves to not want
to "turn them over", not to the authorities or rightful owners,
but for profit.
Most of these thieves have habits they need to support, either their
lifestyle, drugs, women, gambling, alcohol. Following shortly will
be a flier with these mares pictures on them. Please keep them for
your records..or better yet make copies of them to hang wherever
they can be viewed by the public.
Just one flier can make the difference and it doesn't have to be
in a horse related area. One flier hung in a grocery store was spotted
by a women looking for directions. She called the owners to tell
them she had found their horse. The most joyous phone call they
had ever received. The mare was returned to her owners 51 weeks
after she had been stolen. I hope the flier that you will receive
will reunit D.A. Rihkha and Sarajah Sun with their rightful owners.
Although we think it couldn't happen to use, please be aware that
it can. Horse thieves are throughout the US and Canada. You ask
how a horse taken from Canada can be back in the US. Shipping papers
are rarely checked when horses are brought across the border. Someone
could be watching your barns, pastures or your horse at a show,
without you even knowing.
Visit some of the websites available to see what you can do to protect
your companion and help others that are missing. Horse owners out
number thieves and if we ban together, we can make a difference.
Thank you for your time, Sue Valyer

Stolen in September 1998 from Nebraska
When Shi Anne was stolen my mom and dad put an ad in the local
paper that said she was missing, and they talked to some of the
people who have land by ours to see if they had seen anything, but
nobody had much information. One neighbor had seen her two days
before she was missing -- he was fond of her and always visited
her when he went to his pasture.
Shi Anne was friendly and would come to a whistle or would just
come up to chat when she recognized a vehicle. When she was stolen,
my grandpa was in the hospital, so my mom and dad were preoccupied
with that and hadn't been out to check her. Mom wonders if it was
a local person who stole her, knowing that they probably wouldn't
be around. It had rained between the time the neighbor saw her and
when dad discovered she was gone, and he didn't see any tracks in
the pasture. They searched the pasture when she didn't come, to
see if she was hurt somewhere or if there was an opening in the
fence, but they found nothing. It was unusual for Shi Anne to be
away from the cows, because she sort of hung out with them and considered
herself their queen. I don't think there were any cows missing.
(some of the details are hard for me, because I only have them second
hand from my parents) There was no response to the ad in the paper,
and my parents basically didn't know what to do.
One of my mom's friends said that she had spoken about Shi Anne
to a man from our area, who now lives in Colorado. She indicated
that something in the man's reaction made her suspect he knew more
than he would say. Mom and her friend went to the part of Colorado
where this man and another local family now live, and searched for
Shi Anne by driving down roads in the country, etc. Mom also contacted
the brand inspector (I think that's what it is called) in Colorado
and gave him the details on Shi Anne. Until recently, that was the
only action we have taken. Mom was just so upset and didn't know
really where to begin. I was worse, I didn't want to hear about
it or think about it, so I really didn't help. I feel bad now, because
if I hadn't been trying to convince myself it hadn't happened, I
could have tried the internet months ago and we probably would have
had a better chance of finding her.
Recently, my parents have made fliers and sent some to horse related
businesses in some of the surrounding states -- primarily Colorado.
I have posted Shi Anne's description on a couple of websites for
stolen horses, though I don't have any pictures on the net. I don't
know if this is useful information, but when they asked the man
in Colorado about Shi Anne, he said that he heard the man who trims
her hooves stole her. Mom and dad didn't pursue this. I don't know
the man well myself. He grew up in our town, and last year dad hired
him to help on our farm until his horse- shoeing business took off.
They don't think he would do such a thing, and I don't think they
wanted to accuse him -- writing the comment off to malicious local
gossip.
I miss her, even though I'd only see her when I went back home --
maybe once a month. We got her the summer after my freshman year
in college, and I spent that whole summer with her. We kept her
in a lot a block from our house, and I'd brush her everyday and
sing to her and stupid stuff like that. I'd always wanted a horse
when I was a little girl, so I was so excited to have her. I've
never ridden her. I guess I was scared to because I'd never ridden
before, and by the time she was old enough to break I was away from
home year round. Still every time, I went home I'd go out and brush
her or take her picture and give her the good grass from the other
side of the fence. Shi Anne wasn't always a good horse, she had
a bad habit of nipping -- sometimes in an irritated way and sometimes
seemingly out of the blue. Also, she was very irritable when she
ate her grain and wanted to be left alone then. She always was easy
to catch and halter in the pasture, and often would just tag along.
She didn't like to be tied, and knew that she could get loose if
she pulled. I think she was good about lifting her hooves to have
them trimmed. She was very interested in children and perked up
at the sight of them. We always thought it was because the place
we bought her had a little boy and girl who would brush her and
zip around the barn on their bikes.
Wow, this is long. Sorry about that. It just feels good to talk
about her.

In A Spin
- 8 year old Quarter Horse Stallion - Illinois - Taken 9/29/98
Description:
He is about 15 hands and a orange-red sorrel with full mane
and (unfortunately for showing) rather skimpy tail.
He had sliders on his back hooves when he left.
He looks very much like Topsail
Cody.
My reiner, an 8-year-old stallion, IN A SPIN,
by Topsail Cody, has been missing from the stable in Mokena, Illinois
(southwest of Chicago and east of Joliet) sometime between 10 pm
Monday, Sept. 28 and 7 am, Tuesday, Sept. 29. No one has reported
seeing a loose horse in the area, and we now have reason to believe
that he has been stolen.
We are offering a reward.
Please let us know if you have heard or seen anything that could
be helpful in our getting him back.
Please call Nova Quarterhorses at 708-479-3696
or Email: JHonuOL@aol.com
Thank you, Janie Harrison.
