Instructions for using FTP to send graphics and text files.

The letters FTP simply stand for File Transfer Protocol. This refers to one of code formats developed for transfering files over the internet. Usually it is a faster method and less inclined to run into a problem with file corruption.

The best way to send a file is to convert the file to a binary hexed format before attaching it. If you do not convert the file, we will receive it as a text file instead of a graphic file. It is best to "Stuff" (MacIntosh systems use "StuffIT") or "Zip"(IMB type systems use "PKzip") the file first. This makes the size of the file smaller by compressing the code and shortens the length of time it takes to transfer it. We have sucessfully recieved uncompressed, un-binhexed files in FTP in the past, so if you want to deal with the time it may take to send it, go ahead and transfer it as a straight JPEG or GIF file.

The URLy server has an FTP application running on it with a public access (anonymous transfer) folder. You can see the organization structure "tree" of that folder (directory) if you use the Netscape Bowser and "call" the URL ftp://ftp.URLy.com/pub/. The folder (directory) PillionGallery is where the graphics files should be sent (uploaded). Unfortunately, the Netscape Browser only has the ability to get (download) files, not send them.

If you use FTP to send us your digital photograph file, please send the text in an Email message. Tell us that you have put the file into the PillionGallery FTP folder and tell us what the name of it is. Our Email address is webmaster@URLy.com.

You will need to use a software program designed for doing FTP. America Online has an excellent FTP function that comes as part of it's browser package. Use the Password option. You will need to enter:

The FTP address: ftp.URLy.com
The User ID: anonymous
The password: Your Email address
